Numbness in hands and feet: causes, treatment, and prevention

Why does numbness occur in hands and feet?

Feeling tingling, numbness, or stabbing pain in the hands and feet is a common experience that can occur at any time of day. It’s often associated with poor posture when sleeping or sitting, but it can also be a symptom of more serious conditions, such as nerve damage from toxins or muscle problems. Although many people mistake it for arthritis, in some cases, the true cause may be tenosynovitis, an inflammation of the synovial membrane that surrounds the tendons.

Main causes of tingling and numbness

Among the most common reasons that can trigger this sensation in the extremities are:

  • Tendinitis : Inflammation of the tendons due to overuse or repetitive movements.
  • Arthritis : Inflammation of the joints that can cause pain and stiffness.
  • Bursitis : Inflammation of the synovial sacs, which cushion friction between bones, tendons and muscles.
  • Wrist or ankle injuries : Sprains, fractures, and trauma can cause compression of nerves and affect blood circulation.

When to worry?

If the numbness disappears within a few minutes, it’s likely a temporary paresthesia caused by poor posture. However, if it occurs frequently or persists for long periods, it could be a sign of a more serious condition, such as a neurological disease or chronic nerve injury.

Treatment and prevention options

Treatment depends on the underlying cause of the numbness. Some options include:

  • Cold and heat therapies : Help reduce inflammation and improve circulation.
  • Exercises and stretches : Maintain flexibility and prevent muscle stiffness.
  • Use of splints or orthopedic supports : Immobilizing the affected area can relieve pressure on the nerves.
  • Anti-inflammatory medications : In some cases, antibiotics or pain relievers may be necessary to treat severe infections or inflammation.

In extreme cases, when inflammation is persistent and affects mobility, surgery may be required to relieve pressure on the nerves or remove accumulated pus. To avoid complications, it’s important to treat the problem promptly and avoid repetitive strain that can aggravate the condition.
